Banaras Calling

Poetry, essays, write-ups, photography, painting, short-films, documentaries

For the call that spiritual flow and cultural tradition of Banaras is - the mystical enigma, a city of paradoxes and a city of salvation – the questions that it answers – the questions that it asks – Banaras fascinates by its carefree lifestyle yet being the seat of eternal spiritual heritage – Banaras confuses by its lyrical spirituality yet practical reality of being a city of ancient wisdom in transition to assimilate the changes the time calls for – a transition that looks lost somewhere.

THESE RAINDROPS ARE LIKE YOUR MEMORIES..

These raindrops are like your memories,
Sometimes,
They come to heal this burning mind,
And sometimes,
They make the heart so restless,
That the falling rain,
Leaves me with the ‘feeling of not being’

SITTING SILENT, HE WOULD TRY TO LOOK INSIDE HIM TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF HIS SILENCE

He used to sit there, at those steps. It was his daily routine, for years. He didn’t remember when it was the last time he violated his routine.
He had not taken any vow. He was never deeply religious.
Often, he did not look at God as he was looking at God.
Yes, he questioned God, but turned back to Him, as well.
Yes, he used to come there, to sit there. Coming there had become like a part of his daily life. He was so deeply into it that he consciously avoided going anywhere that could have taken him away from this routine.

HOW OLD IS VARANASI? MODI SHOULD MAKE IT A FOCUS AREA

Varanasi has many expectations from the prime minister of India, Narendra Modi. The parliamentary constituency of the prime minister is expecting to be compensated for the long lull of development on almost every parameter the city has seen.

And the expectation of having some solid work on city’s historical aspects must be in the list and must be met.

Varanasi is claimed to be among the oldest continuously inhabited cities globally – the rational and scientific views say it.

Varanasi is claimed to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world – the religious and spiritual views say it.

Varanasi may have a dense population now, in the post-Independence days with rapid increase in last few decades, but the city has always been with its citizens, in every age, making excavations difficult.

GOOD SAMARITANS AND SAVIOURS: GUNDAS OF BANARAS IN ITS HISTORY

I have been reading about it. To look for more and finding more on it fascinates me. And the lack of much written on it disappoints me.

So far, some books (not much available) and scarcely available content on internet have been the primary recourse to access more information on them.

Gundas (gang leaders) of Banaras (Benaras/Kashi/Varanasi) of 18th and 19th Centuries are a eulogized lot, moving in the legends of the city.

They are brave. They are charming. They are ferocious. They are soft inside, hiding their ‘heart’ on some past ‘painful’ development.
